When we opened the store in November 2007, we needed art. We wanted a place for Bozeman area artists to express themselves in a sexually frank way. We feel that art is a good way to discuss sexuality. Art offers a new perspective. Art can revel a passion or express a truth that is beyond words. Just like sex. We want to project new ideas into the world, not just accept other cultures images. We used chalk because we wanted to create a cognitive dissonance. Most people associate chalk with school and restaurant menus, not something beautiful and yet transient. A creative rebirth that changes every season. The chalkboard is big: 6ft X 3.75ft. Those dimensions are the golden ratio. It sits right at our front door. It changes every season. In three years we’ll have enough for calendar, and in ten we’ll have a snapshot into Bozeman’s past that’s totally unique. It’s very fun.
The three rules we set for the artist are
1. It has to say Érotique.
2. It has to say the season and year.
3. Do whatever you want.
